Hawaiian Monk Seal Response
Protect Maui’s Endangered Hawaiian Monk Seals
The Marine Institute at Maui Ocean Center (MOCMI), in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), leads Hawaiian monk seal conservation on Maui. Our trained responders:
-
Respond to Sightings & Haul-Outs: Track and monitor seals resting on beaches to ensure they remain undisturbed.
-
Educate the Public: Sharing conservation information and safe viewing practices — keep at least 50 ft from seals, 150 ft from mother-pup pairs.
-
Support Molting & Pupping Events: Ensure monk seal safety during vulnerable life stages.
-
Provide Health Assessments & Rescue Assistance: Identify and help seals in need of medical care.
-
Engage Volunteers: Train and support community members to monitor and protect seals.
Through hands-on conservation, research, and public education, we protect individual seals and support population recovery.
