Monk Seal Response
The Living Legacy
Why We Protect ʻīlioholoikauaua
The Hawaiian monk seal (Neomonachus schauinslandi) is one of the most endangered marine mammals on Earth and the only tropical seal species endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. Known in Hawaiian as ʻīlioholoikauaua (dog that runs in the rough seas), only approximately 1,600 of these living fossils remain. Every seal that hauls out on a Maui beach is vital to the species' recovery, yet they face constant threats from habitat loss, disease (such as toxoplasmosis), and human interactions.

Our Official Role & Coordination
The Marine Institute leads Hawaiian monk seal conservation on Maui, providing direct management and coordination of the sighting and response network for this endangered species. This work is conducted in partnership and coordination with NOAA Fisheries to support the protection and recovery of the species. All response and monitoring activities are performed under appropriate federal authorizations and from a safe distance in accordance with established guidelines.

Our Approach
Protection Through Presence
Unlike our sea turtle program, our work with monk seals is non-interventional unless we and our partners find seals in life-threatening situations. In addition, we protect seals by managing the human-wildlife interface on the shore.

3
Public Diplomacy
Triggered by our community hotline, staff and volunteers are dispatched to reported sightings to conduct remote health assessments and document movement data.
We secure protective perimeters with clear signage, allowing hauled-out seals to rest undisturbed while providing essential context for beachgoers.
Our responders act as on-site educators, sharing how to safely view seals—maintaining at least 50 feet for individuals and 150 feet for protective mother-pup pairs.
Support & Stewardship
The recovery of the Hawaiian monk seal depends on a delicate balance of professional response and active community stewardship. With only approximately 1,600 individuals remaining, every seal that hauls out on a Maui beach represents a vital opportunity for the species to thrive. We invite you to explore the following pathways to join us on the front lines of protecting these rare marine mammals and the shorelines we share.
